Types of Massages

SWEDISH (RELAXATION) MASSAGE

Swedish massage is the most common type of massage therapy in the United States. Therapists use long smooth strokes, kneading, and circular movements on superficial layers of muscle using massage oil or lotion. Swedish massages can be very gentle and relaxing. If you've never had a massage before, we would recommend trying this one first.

DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE

Our deep tissue massages target the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, using slower strokes or friction techniques across the grain of the muscle. Deep tissue massages can be used for chronically tight or painful muscles, repetitive strain, postural problems, or recovery from injury.

MYOFASCIAL RELEASE

Myofascial release is the three-dimensional application of sustained pressure and movement into the fascial system in order to eliminate fascial restrictions and facilitate the emergence of emotional patterns and belief systems that are no longer relevant or are impeding progress. First, an assessment is made by visually analyzing the human frame, followed by the palpation of the tissue texture of various fascial layers. Upon locating an area of fascial tension, gentle pressure is applied in the direction of the restriction. Myofascial release is an effective therapeutic approach in the relief of cervical pain, back pain, fibromyalgia, scoliosis, neurological dysfunction, restriction of motion, chronic pain, and headaches.

MYOFASCIAL TRIGGER POINT THERAPY

Based on the discoveries of Drs. Janet Travell and David Simons in which they found the causal relationship between chronic pain and its source, myofascial trigger point therapy is used to relieve muscular pain and dysfunction through applied pressure to trigger points of referred pain and through stretching exercises. These points are defined as localized areas in which the muscle and connective tissue are highly sensitive to pain when compressed. Pressure on these points can send referred pain to other specific parts of the body.

PRENATAL/PREGNANCY MASSAGE

Performed by a trained perinatal specialist, many methods of massage and somatic therapies are both effective and safe prenatally and during labor and postpartum periods of womens pregnancies. Prenatally, specific techniques can reduce pregnancy discomforts and concerns and enhance the physiological and emotional well-being of both mother and fetus. Skilled, appropriate touch facilitates labor, shortening labor times and easing pain and anxiety. In the postpartum period, specialized techniques rebalance structure, physiology, and emotions of the new mother and may help her to bond with and care for her infant. Specialized, advanced training in the anatomy, physiology, complications, precautions, and contraindications is highly recommended, and many practitioners require referrals from physicians prior to therapy.

CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY

CranioSacral therapy is a light touch technique that works to relax the soft tissue tensions on the nervous system. Since the nervous system controls everything within and of our bodies, any irritation to it can cause dysfunction in any system. By removing strains and irritations from the nervous system, it allows the body to self-correct and function to its best ability. CranioSacral therapy can be used to treat headaches, TMJ syndrome, scoliosis, spinal pain, chronic fatigue, learning disabilities, brain and spinal injuries, colic, torticollis and many other conditions.

SHIATSU MASSAGE

The four most common types of shiatsu are Zen, Five Elements, Ohashiatsu, and Ashiatsu: Zen shiatsu techniques involve pressure from the hands, knees, fists, elbows, and palms and focuses mostly on acupressure points, which is more therapeutic than relaxing.

Benefits of Receiving a Shiatsu Massage

Shiatsu can help relieve constipation when applied to abdominal area. The stretching and pulling of the massage can loosen muscles and relax the intestines and colon.

Shiatsu can work the tension and spasms out of the muscles, thus eliminating muscle aches by rubbing and pulling at the skin and muscles, and by pressing on acupressure points that release tension.

Migraines are caused by a rapid widening and narrowing of the blood vessels in the brain or head, causing irritation and pain. Shiatsu helps to aid migraines by relaxing the body and increasing blood flow and circulation throughout the body.

Shiatsu is also a non-invasive therapy that helps reduce stress, tension, anxiety and depression by leaving you relaxed and calm.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammation of the body’s tissue and attacks the linings of the joints. Pressure from the massage can be applied to hands, feet or any area that is affected by arthritis, it also helps to limber muscles, gives muscles nutrition by improved circulation and also helps reduce muscular pain.

Helps stimulate circulation in capillaries of the skin’s soft tissues. The massage also serves to stimulate the secretion of the sebaceous glands and keeps skin moist and smooth. This helps give skin resilience and prevents wrinkling. The improved blood circulation also helps improve the look and glow of the skin.

Shiatsu massages have been used for thousands of years to aid women during monthly cycles and alleviate menstrual cramps. On the flip side it has been known to help women in labor and babies turn in the womb. It can induce labor in women who are overdue and help ease morning sickness and swelling that is often caused by pregnancy.

Not only does shiatsu help improve the circulation and cellular nutrition throughout the body but also benefits the digestive system by allowing food to digest more easily and aides in waste elimination. It increases stamina by storing energy reserves and assists in fat metabolism and removal.

Helps those who suffer from fatigue and weakness by restoring and maintaining the body’s energy.

REFLEXOLOGY

Reflexology is a type of massage used to relieve tension, based on a theory that there are reflex points on the hands, feet and ears linked to different parts of the body. Reflexology works by increasing circulation to the corresponding organ or area of the body. Reflexology may also work by stimulating the release of endorphins, a group of feel-good brain chemicals that reduce pain and diminish the negative effects of stress. The benefits of reflexology include decreased anxiety, headache relief, increased circulation, and promotion of healing.

According to the Reflexology Association of America, these techniques stimulate neural pathways and support optimal functioning of the body. Reflexologists use techniques such as thumb and finger walking to stimulate reflex points on your feet, often corresponding to a related organ. This type of massage could be a good fit for you if you enjoy foot massages.
